We will not have a Speaker of the Month. Rather, as we have done in years past, we will have “The Rose Ceremony” where we say “thank you” to Current Board Members and “WELCOME” to the incoming Board of Directors and Executive Committee.
We will also spend some time, at our tables, compiling lists of suggested charities that will be used to compile the final list of our CHARITY OF THE MONTH for the 2022-2023 year.
Our Monthly Luncheon will be held at the Bluegrass Country Club on Thursday, June 9th at 11am. Reservations for the luncheon should be received no later than 8:00pm on Monday, June 6th and can be made as follows:
- Phone or text Rita Krupp at 760-518-5329
- Email to newcomersluncheon@gmail.com
- Online at www.newcomerssumner.org/luncheon
The cost of the luncheon is $25. You can pay at the door, mail in a check, or pay in advance on-line.
Our June Charity:
Summer Month of Reading Experiences (S’MORE) will kick off in July!!! This program is sponsored by Improve Hendersonville, The Literacy Council of TN, local businesses, and individuals.
After a year of planning, S’MORE Camp launched in 2018. The focus was on the prevention of the loss of reading skills that often occurs over the summer break. Nineteen low-income students, who were from two elementary schools and entering grades 2 or 3 in the fall, were selected. Studies have shown that students can lose two or three months of what they learned during the school year in just the few weeks of summer break. The “pilot program” was an unqualified success and clearly demonstrated the need to continue and expand it.
S’MORE will again take place in July, expanding to help at-risk students going into grades 2, 3, and 4. The camp will be held on weekdays, for eight hours daily, taught by professional teachers. There is no charge for the students. During the past four years, half of the students have maintained their reading skills while the other half have improved their skills. It requires approximately $20,000 to pay for the teachers, meals for the students, and reading materials. We are thrilled to join with other organizations who are supporting this wonderful program.
